Affrica Spence, known creatively as ByAffrica, is a multidisciplinary artist, poet, and community builder who believes in making space — not waiting for it. Rooted in a love mindset and guided by lived experience, Affrica’s work spans poetry, visual storytelling, advocacy, and cultural programming. From spoken word stages to film festivals, gallery walls to anime meetups, she’s been doing things her own way — with care, intention, and a little bit of flair.

Originally from Calgary and raised with Jamaican roots, Affrica’s creative path has taken her through Montreal and now to Toronto, where she continues building community through art. She is the founder of ByAffrica, a creative hub focused on healing and storytelling, and BLAC (Black Lovers of Anime Collective) — a love letter to Black nerds who deserve safe spaces to dream, geek out, and be seen.

Her film and poetry projects have screened at events like CaribbeanTales International Film Festival, Canada Shorts (2021 & 2023), and Toronto Shorts (2023). She’s also been featured in exhibits including Penticton Art Gallery and Nuit Blanche (2024), and interviewed on platforms like Roots Reggae Hub and Power FM Jamaica.

Whether she’s performing, painting, facilitating a writing workshop, or creating safe digital spaces, Affrica leads with heart and a deep belief in the power of voice — especially when it’s messy, vulnerable, and real.
